Banmei Takahashi est un cinéaste japonais méconnu en France où ses films n’ont pas exploités. Il a longtemps œuvré dans le cinéma pinku ou roman porno, des films érotiques à la mode 70 qu’il enchaînait de façon industrielle, notamment au sein du studio de Kōji Wakamatsu où il œuvra dans un premier temps comme scénariste.
Dans les années 80, le cinéaste s’essaie à des genres plus populaires et épouse l’actrice Keiko Sekine qu’il dirigera notamment dans son incursion dans le thriller horrifique Door, en 1988. Le film d’horreur ne sort à l’international que 35 ans plus tard, en raison de la disparition de ses bobines.
Banmei Takahashi fait partie des membres fondateurs de la société de production Director’s Company, aux côtés des cinéastes Kazuhiko Hasegawa, Toshiharu Ikeda, Sōgo Ishii, Kazuyuki Izutsu, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Kichitaro Negishi, Kazuki Ōmori, et Shinji Sōmai. La société a notamment produit The Crazy Family (1984) et Evil Dead trap (1988) et fera faillite dix ans après son lancement.
